Berry BayA few years ago, we decided to try our luck fishing in Berry Bay. It was about six in the evening in late summer and the bream were biting fast and furious, hungry for a late snack before they called it a day. Elton, however, was distracted by something else. The sun's angle was low in the sky and so intense it seemed to burn right through the palmettos at the rivers edge, creating a beautiful halo effect. This was one of those rare lighting situations that artists dream of, so we put the fishing rods down and reached for the camera, capturing the moment, or so we thought. The results on film were less than favorable but the image was burned in his memory, so he was able to re-create it during the painting process in his studio. As the painting developed, he decided to add the mallards to complete the scenario, since the entire area is dotted with an assortment of old duck blinds. |
