Old Ferry RoadCountry has as many meanings as there are people, each relating to the word in his own way. From my own past it conjures up backroads, front porch swings, rural mailboxes, Spanish moss, dappled shadows, fragrant wisteria, cow crossings, barbed wire and blackberries, chinaberry trees, tin roofs, sugar cane, buttercups, Lifebuoy soap, brown eggs, small puppies, screen doors with rusty hinges and strong coffee. I remember crickets at dusk, fence-line weeds, wooden cisterns, lightening bugs, fig trees, stewed chicken and black-eyed peas, spotted dogs and striped cats, rope swings and bare feet. Just as memorable are cane-bottom chairs, sleeping porches, wood smoke and burning leaves, mosquitoes and Flit-guns, line- dried sheets, feather beds, rice pudding and homemade rolls. |
